Food seems to be the star of the show at a picnic so play it up. You don’t have to just throw a bag of potato chips on the table and call it good. Nothing says picnic like a gingham tablecloth and a fun picnic basket. Be creative in how you display your food. Nicely laid out food is always more appetizing. Why do you think those high end restaurants get away with charging so much and not giving you very much food. It is presentation.
Here are just a couple reminders of the basics…
- Don’t over pack, I use to do this all the time and all it did was make my back hurt because I hauled around to much weight.
- Make sandwiches! You can make delicious gourmet sandwiches and save money.
- Make sure that you add ice to your cooler for the cold things. If you don’t have cooler, I suggest that you invest in one to protect your food and to be able to serve cold drinks to your family. If you don’t have one try picking one up at a thrift store or a garage sale.
- Don’t have a wicker picnic basket? Pack all your stuff in a small laundry basket.
- Have your kids help pack the basket. They will appreciate this activity much more then if it was all made up for them.
- You don’t have to buy special plates and utensils for your picnic. Bring your own. You can even wrap you silverware in a napkin and tie it with a ribbon.
- Fill your empty water bottles with water and then freeze them. Pack them with you in the cooler and then when you get to the park you will have ice cold water to drink after it thaws a little. It will also help keep the cooler cold on the ride.
- Go to the dollars store and buy some toys that your kids will have fun with all day long. You can also just bring your own buckets and old kitchen utensils for them to play with.
- Don’t forget the best budget friendly dessert ever… WATERMELON!
Have fun this weekend and don’t forget the joy is in the journey.
